Sumatra Ketiara (Organic) Espresso

Syrupy and smooth, with molasses sweetness, praline and cinnamon sugar.

  • Info

Twenty years ago, the chairwoman of the Sumatran-based Ketiara co-operative began to purchase cherries and process these into green coffee.  After selling to local traders for about a decade, she organised farmers to form a co-operative, which was established in 2009 with 38 members. Today, Ketiara has become one of the most recognised coffee suppliers in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra.

Surrounded by the Gunung Leuser National Park, the co-op consists of almost 2000 members and covers an area over 1600 hectares. 100% of the coffee produced is certified organic and grown under natural shade. Farmers deliver their handpicked cherries to a collector for pulping and drying. Once the desired moisture level has been reached, it is delivered to the co-operatives central processing plant in Takengon, where the coffee is hulled and dried to export levels. Prior to exporting, the coffee undergoes final sorting by hand and an electronic colour sorter.
