Ethiopia Shakisso (Purple Variety) Espresso

Juicy, ripe peach with delicate florals and raspberry acidity. Creamy marzipan and honeycomb sweetness.

  • Info

The Shakisso Farm is located in the Guji zone, the southern part of Oromia and one of Ethiopia’s largest regions. The farm was started by Haile Gebre and by 2001 began producing organic coffees. Today, Shakisso Farm is Organic, Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade USA certified and Haile works closely with medium-sized local outgrowers who specialise in highland forest coffee.

In 2017, due to the striking purple colour and intense sweetness of the cherries, this washed lot was selected and designated as the Shakisso Purple Variety; a fruit driven coffee, with a balanced red berry acidity and honeycomb sweetness.

Shakisso Farm is spread out over 640 hectares, including its own nursery sites to grow coffee seedlings. During harvest, more than 300 coffee pickers assist in handpicking the ripe cherries. As of 2018, there are twelve permanent staff with more than ten years practical experience in coffee production, processing, clearing and marketing.

Gold mines are abundant in the area, with the coffee fields literally full of holes where people have been digging for gold. This makes walking between the coffee trees risky and as a result, one of the biggest challenges for Haile Gebre is to find employees to maintain the plantation and assist during harvest.
