  • Info

A classic profile from one of our all time favourite coffee growing regions, this stunning washed Yirgacheffe coffee is produced by a privately owned communal wet mill in the town of Chelelektu, Kochere.

The mill, owned by Mercha Assefa, collects and purchases coffee cherry from over 650 local smallholder famers, and proceeds to blend, process, dry and export the coffee on their behalf. The farmers from Chelelektu will deliver tiny quantities of cherry to the mill daily; farmers within the Chelelektu community have, on average, just one hectare of productive land. The vast majority of these coffee farms utilise organic farming practices by default, with organic compost being used and a minimal intervention approach to coffee growing and pruning being prevalent.

This approach to farming, combined with the comparatively low density of trees being planted (maximum of 1500 trees per hectare, compared to 3500 plus being common in South America), means that yields are very low.

The coffee cultivars grown throughout the Chelelektu community are collectively referred to as “Ethiopian Heirloom”, though they are in reality a mix of local native forest varieties that have been transplanted onto private farms. Most of these varieties will be extremely old Typica strains and hybrids that have developed over thousands of years
